History
Origins
Submera was built on the last known ruins of Atlantis,[1] seemingly set in the Ocean of the Untamed, in the Western Pacific Ocean.[3]
Early Years
In the youth of Namor, Submera suffered famine as a consequence of Emperor Thakorr's taxation, and consequently rebelled against him, led by Lord Swordfish, declaring the Free State of Submera. Thakorr sent his grandson Namor to deal with them, with the order of refusing enemy surrender, and Swordfish and his Seahorse Hussars marched to meet them. At the mere sight of Namor, Swordfish ordered the retreat and accepted Thakorr's taxation, but Namor, pushed by his bannerman and by the voice of Neptune, seemingly slaughtered them.[3]
Despite Namor crushing Swordfish's rebellion, Submera seemingly remained independent from Atlantis.
Southern Submera sent an ambassador to Namor's coronation.[2]
Modern Age
By the Modern Age, the Free-State of Southern Sumbera was only pure untamed undersea frontier, the lowest and most remote undersea community, lacking technology and medicine. Its inhabitants had become addicted to the last of the old magic left in the ruins, which was used to grow a seaweed crop that was mixed with other materials to produce Black Mash, a drug that when consumed made them stronger, more violent, mistrustful, narrow-minded, paranoid, and into inbreeding.[1]
Hulk awoke in the Free-State of Southern Submera, after being taken there by his alter ego.[4] He was forced to assist the Atlantean doctor (and siren) who surgically put the source of the magic in him, a stone. The doctor did it so that they could take it away from the city, and end its inhabitants addiction. The Hulk was forced to fight his way through the local warriors and their aquatic beasts. Once they made it to the surface, the doctor took the rock out of the Hulk and left to explore the surface world, having an airplane ticket.[1] Unable to reproduce Black Mash, the Atlanteans of Submera toasted with the last of it to the death of the Hulk.[5]Residents

- Submera is supposed to be set on the ruins of Old Atlantis (which was set in the Northern Atlantic Ocean) per Incredible Hulk (Vol. 4) #9). In Namor (Vol. 2) #3, the troops of Submera meet with Namor at the Ocean of the Untamed, in the Western Pacific Ocean. It is unclear whether this is an error, if the Old Atlantis upon which Submera was built was a mere colony of Atlantis proper, if Lord Swordfish and the Seahorse Hussars met Namor away from their home, if Submera moved away to the Atlantic Ocean at some point after their defeat at the hands of Namor, or if the Free-State of Southern Submera in the Northern Atlantic Ocean is associated in name only with the Free State of Submera in the Western Pacific Ocean.
